It is bordered by the Chhapra and Gandak rivers to the east, Siwan District to the south, and Deoria District of Uttar Pradesh to the northwest. It consists of 1981 square kilometers of rural area and 52 square kilometers of urban area. The district comprises one Nagar Palika, 3 Nagar Panchayats, and 5 urban areas. Within Gopalganj District, there are 234 Gram Panchayats and 1566 villages. The district is divided into 14 blocks. According to the 2011 Census of India, the population of Gopalganj District is 2,562,012, with 1,267,666 males and 1,294,346 females.
