Policing is more than 3000 years old practice, dating back to the days of the Magadh Empire and There is historical evidence of the adoption of intensive policing practices in the Magadh empire more than 2,000 years ago, where the head of police was known as Dandapala. His main role was to maintain law and order in the society while implementing harsh injunctions of Arthashastra to collect taxes and suppress rebellions.Modern policing in Bihar started in 1862 under the provisions of the Indian Police Act 1861. After Bihar was carved out as an independent province in 1912 from Bengal, the basic structure of police was created as it exists today. Gopalganj remained a village till 1875, then in 1875 it became a subdivision of Saran district. In 1973 it became an administrative district of the state of Bihar, containing headquarter in the city of Gopalganj. Gopalganj Police is the police system responsible for law enforcement within gopalganj district ,headquarter at gopalganj city .The head of the police forces in gopalganj is the Superintendent of Police (SP). The present SP of gopalganj Police is SWARN PRABHAT, an IPS officer of 2017 batch, since January 4, 2023.The responsibility of SP is to enforce law of the land ,maintain peace and ensure the effective & smooth functioning of the society by maintaining law and order.The gopalganj police also helps the citizens of gopalganj to remain with peace and harmony.At District headquarter, DySP rank officer ( Presently Jyoti Kumari, DySP-HQ) deals with various official works assigned by SP, Gopalganj. Gopalganj district ( Police System) is divided into 2 subdivisions,headed by SDPO (DySP Rank officer- presently Pranjal- SDPO,Sadar & Anurag Kumar- SDPO, Hathua).Gopalganj district ( Police System) consists of 2 circle, headed by Circle Inspectors ( presently Hiralal Prasad, CI-Sadar & Lalan Prasad, CI-Mirganj).There are 20 police stations and 2 Town outpost( TOP- Harkhua (Town PS) & Linebazaar (Mirganj PS)) in the Gopalganj district ( Police System),headed by Inspector/ Sub Inspector Rank Officers . Constable rank police members, Rural police members ( Chaukidaar)and Home Guards at the bottom of hierarchy, work effectively to achieve motto, vision, commitment and goals of "Gopalganj Police".
